these are the days

armed with a pen
but nothing to say

the best years of
my life were spent
breaking my back
in a factory and
sleeping with all
the wrong women

now i’m lost in the
forest at night with
the clouds covering
up the moon

these are the days
that take years off
of your life

rest easy knowing
only a fool would
want to live forever

losing my religion

i had just slipped
into a dream and
was fucking this
beautiful womanArtwork by Gene McCormick
when i heard our
song come on the
radio

it’s been damn
near twenty years
but i still stopped
everything and
started to listen

i immediately
remembered
the wild nights
of alcohol and
manic depression

and the more i
remembered the
heartache seemed
as fresh as a knife
plunging into my
skin

when the song
ended i went
back into the
dream

of course
the beautiful
woman was
gone

i had to try to
find comfort
in misery and
regret

J.J. Campbell has given up the farm life and is now trapped in suburbia. He's been widely published over the years, much to the dismay of others. You can find him most days on his highly entertaining blog, evil delights. (http://evildelights.blogspot.com)
