on these endless nights alone

i ponder death
like an old man
stares at a menu
in a restaurant
he’s never
been in before

i know before
too long i’ll
figure out the
right wine to
go with that
cut of steak

when i was at that age

sometimes i sit
in the kitchen
and watch the
guy behind us
mow a big field
with his kids
riding along
with him

i take a sip of
vodka and think
when i was at
that age

my father was
basically like
there’s the gas,
there’s the brake
try to be done
by the time my
nap is over

and this was when
power steering was
just some passing
fad with riding
lawnmowers

between that
and discovering
masturbation
at an early age

i had the forearms
of popeye before
i left elementary
school

J.J. Campbell (1976 - soon) has given up the farm life and is now trapped in suburbia. He's been widely published over the years, much to the anger of most. You can find him most days bitching about things only he cares about on his blog, evil delights. http://evildelights.blogspot.com
